What’s striking about this passage is how relevant it still is.

Plato’s point — and Marcus’ — wasn’t about philosophers literally ruling, but about the quality of mind required to govern anything well.

A state prospers when the people leading it:

• can see past their own impulses

• operate from clarity rather than identity

• are not captured by fear, anger or narrative

• can hold long-term stability above short-term reward

That’s what “philosopher” meant in their language: not an academic, but a coherent mind.

And that’s the part that still feels timeless.

In terms of leadership, Trump is a manager at best and a bad one at that. He is not a leader in any semblance of the term. Marcus was an actual leader in nearly every important way that counts.

A leader is not the same as a manager, supervisor, president, etc. Manager, management, supervisor, president, etc. are all titles. Leader and leadership are character traits and positive attributes. Anyone can manage, few can actually lead. Leadership is when people want to follow.
